RUT BRYK: THE MAGIC BOX
26 January – 13 May 2018

Rut Bryk (1916–1999) was a Finnish reformer of modern ceramic art whose early, small-scale works are colourful narratives followed by simplified yet sometimes monumental wholes that grow and take over the space. Although many of her works may appear abstract, Bryk never really abandoned the figurative style. Her works are also characterised by a powerful mood, intense sensitivity and an intricacy of detail. The exhibition is produced by EMMA – Espoo Museum of Modern Art.

DICK BENGTSSON
1 June – 26 Aug 2018

Dick Bengtsson (1936–1989) is known as one of Sweden’s most prominent artists. The self-taught painter brought together a range of techniques in his works and encompassed idiosyncratic methods in his works. Bengtsson never gave his personal explanation of the often-surprising details and juxtapositions in his works, but to which the artist nevertheless appears to allude, laying bare the façade of the idyllic Folkhemmet.

ALI MUNSTERHJELM – AXEL HAARTMAN – SANTERI SALOKIVI
14 Sep 2018 – 20 Jan 2019

Ali Munsterhjelm, Axel Haartman and Santeri Salokivi were not just fellow artists, but also leading figures of impressionism and post-impressionism based colour painting in Turku in the early 1900’s. In accordance with their Parisian teachings, the artists would capture the surroundings without forgetting the social aspects of reality. Munsterhjelm specialised in landscapes and urban art, particularly perspectives of the River Aura, while Haartman focused on still lifes, interiors, human portraiture and landscapes. Of the trio, Salokivi’s favourites were portraits, as well as city landscapes.

HEINI AHO: CURE OF ALL
23 Mar –13 May 2018

Balance always includes the presence of opposites, i.e., poison and its antidote. Cure of All is an installation that renders tangible problems visible, such as a wall full of holes, a colour that poisons life and a face that loses its shape. With a poetic logic, it also offers speedy remedies, such as an adhesive bandage that won’t stick, permanent change or ways to detect toxicity.

TUOMAS A. LAITINEN: DOSSIER OF TENTACULAR
26 Jan –18 Mar 2018

Dossier of Tentacular (2018) is a knotty and tragicomic organism that explores the techniques for information production and dissemination, ecological change, and issues involving neoliberal language. In a stream of images that resemble a notebook, absurd poems generated on the basis of Samuel Beckett’s works by artificial intelligence combine with the extraordinary intelligence of a non-human agent, an octopus.

AUJIK: IMPERMANENCE TRAJECTORY
23 Mar – 13 May 2018

AUJIK is an art concept created by Stefan Larsson, who lives and works in Japan. Aujik’s animated imagery of organic-mechanical alien hybrids is paired with the sonic atmosphere set by electronic music. Impermanence Trajectory (2012–2018) is a trilogy based on the theory of a computational universe as proposed by German A.I. pioneer Jürgen Schmidhuber. Each video has its own philosophical idea attached to this theme.
