Johan Bergström Hyldahl (b. 1984) is one of the most fascinating emerging artists in Sweden. He holds an MFA from the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm, and he lives and works in Stockholm. As Hyldahl’s first appearance in Finland, the Darkroom at Turku Art Museum presents his video Dear Jesus, Do Something! (24 min., 2014). Although Hyldahl works with many media, video has recently become one of his most important tools.

Dear Jesus, Do Something! is an epic, orchestrated amalgam of science fiction, film noir, special effects and animation couched in the aesthetics of classical black-and-white film. The video tells about a scientist who has invented a machine that sees a few seconds into the future, and a space hero sent on a mystical journey to the Moon. The story is laced with absurd black humour, as the protagonists’ aspirations are doomed to failure, and the fate of humanity itself is no brighter – in denial, we observe with equanimity as things progress towards the inevitable end. As we are reminded: “There is plenty of misery for everyone.”

Dear Jesus, Do Something! is a tragicomic portrayal of the grandiose project of space exploration and staunch faith in science of the 1950s and 1960s, revealing them as ultimately empty and futile. What have we achieved? What will we reach in the future? If everything is futile, what drives us to continue?
