In autumn Turku Art Museum’s Darkroom features experimental short films by Faroese film duo Rammatik (Rannvá Káradóttir & Marianna Mřrkřre). Four films, Memotekid (2009), Magma (2010), Amohr (2011) and Marran (2011). will acquaint us with their internationally acclaimed and distinctive visual identity seen now first time in Finland.

The works belong to a series of experimental short films that embrace and discover movement through camera. The films shot with a gritty Super 8 film in the extreme and wild landscapes of the remote Faroe Islands. Fragmented stories are unravelled in these open and empty spaces. Free of dialogue and narrative, the repetitive patterns of movements, costumes, music, landscapes and other components create an intriguing atmosphere, taking the viewer to a surrealistic and hauntingly beautiful universe.

Káradóttir and Mřrkřre started experimenting and working together during their studies in London and Rammatik was founded in 2004. Rammatik’s short films have been presented in international film festivals as well as exhibitions and the duo has been awarded with several film awards and nominations.

Rannvá Káradóttir (b. 1978) is a London-based choreographer and filmmaker. Throughout her career she has used film practice in her work and translated a distinctive movement vocabulary to the screen.
Marianna Mřrkřre (b.1978) is a film director and editor. As a London fashion graduate she explores the relations between costume design, movement and editing through complexed visual narratives, signifying a unique visual trademark.
