The exhibition series showcasing video and media art by artists from the Balkan region comes to a close with an exhibition by Danica Dakić (b. 1962) in the Darkroom. In her video Emily (2010, 4:27 min.) different forms of language meet in a learning situation. We see a girl during a lesson in sign language and hear the voice of her teacher alternating between instructions and praise. We hear how the acoustic instructions refine her spatial grammar and the phonology of the hands. Shot in close-up, the video reveals the intensity of the girl’s gaze and the power and sensitivity of her facial expressions. The work was made in Liverpool in collaboration with the Liverpool Signing Choir and photographer Egbert Trogemann.

Danica Dakić lives in Sarajevo and Düsseldorf. She has studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Sarajevo, the University of Arts, Belgrade and the Academy of Fine Arts, Düsseldorf. Her practice extends from video and film to photography, installation and public art projects. In her works she explores corporeal and political aspects of language and identity.

The works exhibited in 2012 in the Darkroom have showcased the recent past in the Balkans and the closeness of war in the area. The heavy themes have affected the viewers deeply, sometimes even shocking them. Yet even in the most complex works the focus has usually been on humanity – on how we act and what we are capable of as human beings. Our actions are occasionally gruesome and we may have difficulty explaining them. The goal is nevertheless to understand, to break the vicious circle of violence and hopefully to make a change for the better. To attain that understanding, we should become aware of how we communicate with other people.

ARTIST’S TALK: On Thursday 8 November 2012 Danica Dakić will give a talk in English about her artistic practice in the Kuvateatteri of the Turku Arts Academy (Linnankatu 54–60) starting at 2 pm. Admission is free and the event is open to the public.

In 2013, the Darkroom will feature media works by artists from the Middle East.
